Are you dreaming of a romantic, intimate wedding ceremony in a breathtaking location far away from home? If your answer is yes, then a destination elopement might be the perfect choice for you! Here are some key steps to help you plan your dream wedding adventure.

1. Choose your destination

The first step in planning a destination elopement is deciding where you want to go. Do you want to exchange vows on a secluded beach, in a lush forest, or in a charming European city? Research different locations that match your preferences and budget, and consider factors such as weather, travel restrictions, and local marriage laws. A lot of couples also opts for the legal marriage to happen before or after the elopement in their home country, where they only “sign the papers”, but they exchange vows and rings in their chosen destination.
Many hotels and resorts offer elopement packages, making it easy to plan the wedding and finding vendors. Depending on your language skills and how much you want your elopement to be customised, you can go in that direction as well!

2. Find the right vendors

Working with experienced vendors who specialise in destination weddings is key to a stress-free planning process. Start by researching wedding planners, venues, photographers (I would be honoured!), videographers, and officiants who have experience in your chosen destination. Look for reviews and portfolios to get a sense of their style and expertise, to see if they match what you have envisioned. A great way to find new vendors is using different hashtags on Instagram and keywords on Pinterest.

3. Consider logistics

Planning a destination wedding requires extra attention to logistical details such as travel arrangements, accommodations, and permits. Be sure to research transportation options, book accommodations for you and your guests, and obtain any necessary permits or licenses for your ceremony (if you choose for the elopement to be legal-binding).

4. Keep it intimate

One of the benefits of eloping is the ability to keep your wedding small and intimate. Consider inviting only your closest friends and family members or even making it just the two of you. This will allow you to focus on each other and enjoy the experience without feeling overwhelmed.

5. Personalise your ceremony

Since you'll likely be exchanging vows in a unique and meaningful location, consider incorporating elements that reflect your personalities and interests. Write your own vows, choose music that speaks to you, or include cultural traditions that are meaningful to you and your partner. In the end, that is the main reason why you decided to elope and do it your way, right?

6. Capture the moment

Your destination elopement is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that deserves to be captured beautifully. Hire a professional photographer and/or videographer who specialises in destination weddings to ensure that you have stunning memories to cherish forever. Sometimes it is difficult to speak to local vendors, there might be a language barrier or time-zone difference. That is why a destination wedding and elopement photographer might make you feel a bit more comfortable and ensure that your memories will not get lost. I’ve been photographing elopements all over the world, including secluded islands and I know the different obstacles that we could run into. This way, I can help with the organisation itself, making sure that everything runs smoothly!

7. Have fun and embrace the adventure!

Remember that your destination elopement is about celebrating your love and commitment in a special way. Don't stress too much about the details and enjoy the adventure of exploring a new place together as newlyweds!

With these tips in mind, you're well on your way to planning a memorable and meaningful destination elopement. Is there anything else that you need help with? Leave a comment and I might focus on it in the next blog post.

Happy planning!
